Statement regarding a fire affecting W.E. Acres Crab Meal of Portage

CAP-ACADIE, NB, February 3, 2023 — The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce has just learned that a fire is currently affecting the W.E. Acres Crab Meal Ltd. business located in the Portage sector of the Regional Town of Cap-Acadie. The fire reportedly broke out in the middle of the afternoon.

W.E. Acres Crab Meal has been a member of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce for many years.

Although we do not know the circumstances that led to this fire, we would like to point out that W.E. Acres Crab Meal Ltd has always believed in the mission of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce and recognizes the importance of having a tightly woven business network.

We also thank the fire departments of the region who responded rapidly to the call, despite the intense cold and the strong winds that began to fall on our sectors.

The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce offers support when necessary to guide business owners to the right resources to overcome this difficult obstacle.

As usual, the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce will reach out to the business affected by this event at the appropriate time.

The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce recognizes that we are in Cap-Acadie, or in Epegoitnag, in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people.

This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which these nations first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

We, the staff and members of the board, pay respect to the elders, past and present, and descendants of this land. We honour the knowledge keepers and seek their guidance as we strive to develop closer relationships with the Indigenous people in New Brunswick.
