CAP-ACADIE, NB, February 1, 2025 — The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce expresses its deep indignation at the tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration on all imports from Canada. This unilateral decision is a direct attack on the principles of free trade, and threatens the strong economic relationship between the two nations.
“Tariffs are a direct attack on the principles of free trade and threaten the strong economic relationship between Canada and the United States,” says Anthony Azard, Chief Executive Officer of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce. “This unilateral decision is unjustified and will have consequences for the economies of both countries. Our key industries, such as fishing, forestry & manufacturing, will be severely affected, putting dozens of local jobs at risk.”
The impact of these protectionist measures will be particularly devastating for New Brunswick and will also harm the American economy. The province, whose economy is closely tied to trade with the United States, will see its key industries, such as forestry and fishing, severely affected, threatening thousands of local jobs. Meanwhile, American manufacturing companies, dependent on Canadian raw materials, will see their costs explode, reducing their competitiveness. Consumers in both countries will pay a high price, with higher prices for essential products and worsening inflation. These protectionist measures will only weaken the economy on both sides of the border.
Faced with this critical situation, the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce is reminding us of the importance of supporting the local economy. Purchasing products and services offered by local businesses is a concrete solution to mitigate the effects of these protectionist measures, according to its CEO.
“More than ever, buying local must become a priority. Every local business has an essential role to play in the economic vitality of New Brunswick. By buying from our local businesses, by choosing local products, each consumer becomes a key player in maintaining and creating jobs in the region. Local businesses need concrete support, and it is together that economic resilience can be strengthened.”
The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce would like to thank the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, the Premier of New Brunswick, Susan Holt, and the Council of the Federation for their commitment to this trade crisis. Their hard work and leadership in this tariff offensive are essential to protect the economy of the country and that of New Brunswick. While response measures will be announced shortly, it is crucial that everyone, governments, businesses and citizens, join forces to support our local industries and promote fair trade. Each citizen can immediately contribute by favouring local products and services, thus strengthening our economy and reducing our dependence on foreign markets.
