HALIFAX, NS, October 19, 2024 – The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that its policy on “Comprehensive Re-evaluation of Predator Species Management to Revitalize Canada’s Fisheries” has been overwhelmingly supported by the Canadian Chamber Network, with a 98.32% approval from about 300 members.
This landmark decision during the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s AGM underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive review of predator species management to protect Canada’s fishing industry, which is a vital economic driver for coastal communities across the country.
The policy highlights the challenges faced by Canada’s fishing industry due to rising populations of predatory species such as grey seals and striped bass, which threaten fish stocks and the entire supply chain, from fisheries to food services. The resolution calls on the Government of Canada to implement modern, science-based management practices to secure the future of this critical sector.
“This overwhelming support from the Canadian Chamber Network reflects the shared commitment of our business community to protect one of Canada’s most vital industries. The fishing industry sustains thousands of jobs and underpins the economies of coastal communities across the country. We are proud to lead this policy effort, and we call on the government to act swiftly to implement modernized predator species management for the benefit of all Canadians”, emphasized Anthony Azard, CEO of the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce.
This policy is not only critical for the Canadian business community as a whole but also for regions like Cap-Acadie, where the fishing industry is a cornerstone of the local economy. Nationally, the industry sustains thousands of jobs and plays a vital role in the supply chain, contributing to food services, exports, and economic stability. Locally, in Cap-Acadie, fishing is the backbone of many businesses, from small family-run operations to large processing plants. Without decisive action on predator species management, both the national and local economies face significant risks.
With the successful adoption of this policy, it will now be included in the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Policy Book for the next three years. This inclusion means that the Canadian Chamber will advocate strongly to the Government of Canada on this issue, pushing for necessary reforms in predator species management.
The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce will remain actively engaged in this process, working closely with the national Chamber to ensure consistent follow-ups and dedicated lobbying efforts. We are committed to making sure this policy leads to concrete action, protecting our fisheries and the economic well-being of communities like Cap-Acadie and beyond.
With the strong backing of the Canadian business community, the Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders and government leaders to ensure sustainable and economically viable fisheries in Canada.
