#5 – Chambre de commerce Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce

It was in January 1996 that the Chamber of Commerce of the Cap-Pelé region Inc. was officially incorporated under the Provincial law. At the time, about thirty members of the Cap-Pelé region wanted to see the establishment of a Chamber of Commerce in the region in order to be the official voice of the business community. The new organization will represent the communities of the Village of Cap-Pelé, Cormier-Village, Portage, Saint-André-LeBlanc, Trois-Ruisseaux, Shemogue and Petit-Cap.

In order to better reflect municipal changes with the creation of an umbrella of local service districts (LSDs) around the Village of Cap-Pelé, the organization changed his commercial name to La Chambre de commerce Cap-Pelé/Beaubassin-Est. The legal name remains the same as in 1994.

The Cap-Acadie Chamber of Commerce recognizes that we are in Cap-Acadie, or in Epegoitnag, in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people.

This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which these nations first signed with the British Crown in 1726. The treaties did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources, but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.

We, the staff and members of the board, pay respect to the elders, past and present, and descendants of this land. We honour the knowledge keepers and seek their guidance as we strive to develop closer relationships with the Indigenous people in New Brunswick.
